"Having used Softobe's FoldersSynchronizerX for several months for
backup purposes, I grew white hair when syncing two hard disks via FireWire.
So I purchased Synchronize! Pro and set up a speed comparison.
My sync test with a 9 GB internal HD and a corresponding folder on a 30 GB
LaCie Pocketdrive (which is a very cute casket, by the way) led to the
following results:
As expected, the initial copies took about the same time in both FSX and
Synchronize! Pro, and so did the inevitable folder scans.
The terrific difference was to
be experienced during the second, that is, the 'regular', sync process, when
there were only seven out of 32,000 files to copy. After the folder scan,
taking about four minutes with both applications, Synchronize! Pro appeared to simply
copy the files just recognized as modified, whereas FSX seemed to pass
through every single file twice more (due to separate processes for both
copy directions), whether the file had been changed or not!
Thus, Synchronize! Pro was completely done in barely five minutes - FSX took a lot longer...
19 minutes overall, which results in a speed factor of 3.8x or saving nearly 75% of the time.
Besides, at first sight Synchronize! Pro appears more reliable since FSX for example
happened to 'forget' its destination folders if the target disk wasn't
continuously available, which is quite annoying if you run your nightly
backup unattended.
While Synchronize! Pro may be the less handsome piece of software, it surely is the far
more useful."
